 NEWSLETTER 7

Welcome to the sixth, and LAST, newsletter with news and information regarding the Tug-of-War World Championships 2018, as well as attractions to see whilst visiting beautiful Cape Town. We cannot believe that the time has flown by so quickly, and the Championships are only a month away!

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

Exactly one month from today, the 24th Tug-of-War World Championships will kick off in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Organizing Committee went to great lengths to make this an enjoyable experience. Everything that we have planned had one singular focus – to make things as easy, comfortable and enjoyable as possible to you, our valued guests.

From your arrival at the airport, where most of you will be welcomed by one of our officials, to your hotel, through the weigh-in process, the competition itself, up to the after-party, we will host you, support you, encourage you and, if necessary, carry you to ensure that you experience true South African hospitality at its best!

To ensure that we are in a position to do all of the above, we have a simple request: that ALL monies due, be paid BEFORE you land. There is a simple reason for this – we want you to experience a ‘seamless’ transition into our country – from landing, to the hotels.

It is our intention to hand your accreditation packs AND your hotel access cards to you on the bus en-route to the hotel already – no waiting in the hotel lobbies, no filling in of forms, no time-consuming late payments – just one smooth easy transition.

The other aspect that we are approaching differently (also for your comfort) is a decentralized weigh-in. We have established FOUR weigh-in facilities – either at your hotel, or very close to your hotel. Each facility will handle 240 to 300 athletes for the weigh-in. In order to smooth the process and to minimize a waiting line, the South African athletes will weigh an hour or so later. An extended breakfast time has been arranged at the hotels so that you can enjoy a well-deserved breakfast straight after your weigh-in. At the weigh-in facilities, we have made provision for a large ‘changing area’, where you can comfortably unclothe just prior to the weigh-in. It is our request that, in order to ensure a fast weigh-in process, that you will exit this area immediately after you weighed – do NOT linger or wait for your teammates here, we want to maintain a fast weigh-in rhythm.

Coaches and Managers must please note that the “Team weigh certificates” for Day 1 must be handed in to the appointed Weighmaster at each of these weigh-in facilities. Again we humbly request that team entries be paid PRIOR to your landing – this will enable the Organizing Committee to hand the manager his team entry documentation at the airport already!

The manager of teams that are travelling outside the official packages OR teams that arrive prior to Monday 17 September, can collect their documentation from the Tournament Office at the Strand Hotel from 08:00 on Monday 17 September.

The link for the livestream will be distributed shortly. In order to ensure that our worldwide audience can feel part of this World Championships and be able to follow events closely, ALL activities will take place at the venue – this includes the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the medal presentation ceremonies as well as on-field ‘entertainment’ every morning from 08:45.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday 21 September at 08:30 at the venue. Representatives of ALL participating countries will be included in the “Parade of Nations”. In this regard, it is requested that each participating country identify 11 athletes – one flag bearer and 10 members, to represent their country in the ‘parade’. These members are to be neatly clothed in the full, official tracksuits of their country. Uniformity is of importance here.

Similarly, the Closing Ceremony will take place on Saturday 22 September at 18:00. Again, 11 athletes from each country will be required to participate in the “Farewell Parade”. The athletes are encouraged to wear the medals that they won during the event, around their necks.

At this stage it is important to note that there will be a host of media at the event. At certain times, no less than three television camera crews will be on the field. In terms of portraying a professional image of the sport, it is requested that the TWIF clothing rule be adhered to 100%.

And finally: the ‘After party’. The theme of the after party is “The World as One”. In this regard, the Organizing Committee wishes to invite all the different countries to display their national identity by wearing their respective national dress/clothes or unique clothing apparel. The buses will again shuttle all participants to the after party. Your accreditation card serves as your entry ‘pass’.

In closing, the Organizing Committee wish everyone all of the best in your final preparations and bid you safe travels – we are excited to welcome you to our beautiful city !

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:

FRANSCHOEK TRAM
The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley – picturesque vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300 year history.

Passengers aboard the hop-on hop-off tour will experience a unique and leisurely way to see the Franschhoek Valley as they journey through rolling vineyards in a double-decker tram and open-air tram-bus stopping in at some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates.

A combination of tram and tram-bus transports passengers around a loop of stops allowing them to hop-off at each stop and experience the activities on offer, be it wine tasting, a cellar tour, lunch or simply a stroll through the vineyards and when they are ready, hop-on to continue the tour.

The tour takes passengers right into the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, with a narration focusing on the history of Franschhoek and wine cultivation in the valley and unparalleled views of the valley and vineyards.

SPIER WINE ESTATE
Not only is there delicious wine tasting available here, but picnics are available if ordered ahead, as well as self-guided walks, Segway tours, Artisan meals, restaurants as well as AMAZING eagle encounters. FAIRVIEW
First and foremost, Fairview is a working farm, housing a collection of micro-businesses all sharing in a common goal – to create artisanal and sustainable produce, with a focus on fine wine and cheese. They have been caring custodians of the land since 1693, and invite you to come and visit  and see for yourself how the farm operates, supports the environment and contributes to a more holistic lifestyle. Everything they do is driven by their philosophy of being honest, honoring their heritage and ensuring that ingenuity perpetually flows from their soils and cellars and straight into the heart of your relationship with them.

LEARN OUR LANGUAGE:
Here are some more truly South African words for you to master before coming to Cape Town This month we are going to make you HUNGRY for some of our traditional dishes !!!

A Traveler's Guide to South African Slang

Biltong

Pronounced bill-tong. Seasoned strips of dried meat – Similar to beef jerky (but much tastier!), this is the spicy, cured snack eaten at rugby matches. It is usually made from beef, game and even ostrich.

Boerewors

Pronounced boo-re-vors. A very popular mixed-meat spiced sausage in South Africa. In Afrikaans, literally “farmer’s sausage.

Boerewors roll/boerie roll

The South African equivalent of the hot dog, using the boerewors with an onion relish in a hot dog bun.
Until we see you in a months time !!
